A Legacy of Landscaping Begins to Grow

John Riepenhoff III started Riepenhoff Landscape at 12 years old, pushing lawn mowers around Upper Arlington. His older sisters would drive him from lawn to lawn while he mowed. By high school, John was hiring his friends and building what was quickly becoming a real business. After graduating from high school, he formally incorporated Riepenhoff Landscape, Inc., and attended The Ohio State University, where he studied horticulture and took every horticulture course the university offered. Throughout the 1970s, 80s, and 90s, Riepenhoff Landscape flourished, growing to more than 60 employees and earning over 100 state and local awards, as well as more than a dozen national recognitions. John built a reputation for quality, craftsmanship, and integrity that became the foundation of the company. Unfortunately, in 2000, John suffered a heart attack and passed away at the age of 45. Following his passing, the business was purchased by Riepenhoff Landscape’s top construction foreman, Steve Purcell, and his wife, Ellen. They continued John’s legacy by maintaining the company name, standards, and reputation for quality that Riepenhoff Landscape had become known for throughout central Ohio.

Rooted in the Family Business

John “Jay” Riepenhoff IV grew up with the same passion for landscaping and construction as his father. As a kid, Jay’s idea of having fun was working in the yard or helping at the family farm. His birthday presents were often hedge trimmers or leaf blowers, while Christmas brought snow blowers and snowplows. He started his own landscaping business in high school and college, hiring his friends, just as his father had years before.

Jay earned a bachelor’s degree in business with a minor in entrepreneurship from The Ohio State University. After college, he worked in real estate and construction, where he found himself wanting to pursue his passion for landscaping. Naturally, his first call was to Steve and Ellen Purcell. From that conversation, the path forward became clear.

On January 6, 2025, Jay officially purchased Riepenhoff Landscape, bringing the company back into the Riepenhoff family and marking the start of the next chapter.
